History of the Tour de Romandie
The tour, which leads through French-speaking western Switzerland, has taken place since 1947. It is held at the end of April/beginning of May and is the main preparation race for the Giro d’Italia. From 2005, the Tour de Romandie was part of the UCI Pro Tour. It includes the most important cycling races of the year and was replaced in 2011 by the UCI WorldTour.
The winners
Only one rider managed to win the Tour de Romandie three times. Ireland’s Stephen Roche did this in 1983, 1984 and 1987. Nine Swiss have won their home race so far. In addition to Ferdy Kübler, Pascal Richard and Tony Rominger also triumphed twice. The last home win was in 1998 by Laurent Dufaux.
