Eight years after the very successful event in Zug and Lucerne, Switzerland is hosting another U18 World Cup in Basel and Porrentruy. One can only hope it ends with euphoria and full stadiums like when Switzerland finished fourth.

In his first two U18 World Championships, coach Marcel Jenni (49), who will be promoted to U20 next season, led the team to the quarter-finals, where they eventually defeated Finland (0:2) and the Czech Republic (0:8). Is there more in it this time? Cautious optimism is in order without raising expectations too high.

Four “minors” born in 2006

Jenni can count on three players to advance their careers abroad: former Biel junior Leo Braillard, who plays in Canada with the Shawinigan Cataractes. Defender Eric Schneller, who left the Lions organization two years ago to play for the juniors of Rögle in Sweden. And Basel striker Matteo Wagner, who made the switch for Kuopio from the SCL Tigers to Finland this season.

One can also be curious about the storming Klotener twins Rafael and Simon Meier.

In addition, Jenni has already called up four “underagers” from the promising 2006 vintage: goalkeeper Christian Kirsch and defender Leon Muggli (Zug), Langnauer striker Jamiro Reber (1.78 m), who is already taller than his father at the age of 16 and former defenseman Jörg (5’7″), as well as Daniil Ustinkov, who even played in the NL playoffs with the ZSC Lions under Marc Crawford.
