Do the Chinese still want to get rid of GC?

That makes you think: according to the American news agency Bloomberg, GC owner Jenny Wang still plans to sell the club. Four weeks ago, when Fosun Envoy Bill Pan returned home from his general inspection of the GC office, the message was: the Chinese stay on board! This was supported by Pan joining GC’s board of directors.

So what’s with the latest news? Wang, wife of Fosun founder Guo Guangchang, is said to have commissioned the investment bank Moelis to screen potential buyers.

Options are checked

Andras Gurovits, interim president of the GC since Sky Sun’s resignation, told Blick: “Recently there have been inquiries from new potential buyers. The owner now wants to have the options for action investigated in a professional process.”

However, there is no concrete intention to sell. Gurovits continues: “In short, the Chinese owners are sticking to their financial commitment to GC and that the club is not for sale. Planning for the next season is proceeding normally and we expect to receive the license for the 2023/24 season initially on May 1.”

Any GC sale is still in the pilot phase. However, the fact that the Chinese are scrutinizing the outlook is a recent development. And indicates that they would be willing to sell if the offer was right.

The question arises: at what cost will the Chinese weaken? Hoping for a bid that covers the 2020 takeover price and the investments made so far in the order of double-digit millions is probably illusory. A buyer will not pay for the mistakes of the previous owners, but will want to put his money into the sporting development of GC.
