It’s a crazy scene the snooker world has never seen before: during Monday night’s night session at the World Championships in Sheffield at the Crucible Theatre, an activist stormed the interior and sprinkled orange paint on one of the two tables. The match between Robert Milkins and Joe Perry had only just begun.
Meanwhile, another troublemaker at the next table tries to do the same – at the last minute, the referee can prevent the second activist from also climbing onto the playing surface. As a result of the incident, gaming on both tables is temporarily suspended.
Table 1 needed to be vacuumed and later locked for the rest of the evening. This should be covered again at night. On the undamaged table 2 (Mark Allen vs. Fan Zhengyi) the match could continue after half an hour.
The two activists belong to the “Just Stop Oil” movement. The group is calling on the British government to stop licensing and producing new fossil fuels.
