Malgin learns from the superstars – and dreams of the bucket

After a strong season and excellent playoffs with the ZSC Lions and a convincing World Cup, Denis Malgin (26) ventured into the NHL for the second time in the summer. “I always had the NHL in mind,” says Oltner.

After two years in Lausanne and Zurich, during which he was able to take on a lot of responsibility on the ice, he returned to the Toronto Maple Leafs and won a spot on the team in preparation. He was used 23 times for the traditional Canadian team, but only scored two goals and two assists. Nati’s striker with Russian roots is satisfied with his performance. “What I missed was luck in the final.”

Malgin was traded to wrestling champion Colorado Avalanche before Christmas. The exchange of Malgin for Dryden Hunt (27) did not hurt the team from Denver: since then only qualifier dominator Boston has scored more points. Although Malgin doesn’t get much ice time in Colorado either, he found his “scoring touch” again. In the past two months, he scored 11 goals in 30 matches.

Malgin loves it in the “Mile High City” (1609 m above sea level) at the foot of the Rocky Mountains. “You can see the mountains, you’re closer to nature, and it’s much quieter than Toronto.” Speaking of calmer: media attention and pressure are also lower at the Avalanche than in the hysterical hockey metropolis of Toronto.

“You learn a lot there”

Similar to the Maple Leafs, where Malgin picks Auston Matthews (25), Mitch Marner (25) and William Nylander (26), the Avalanche has top players. The Swiss praises Nathan MacKinnon (27), gifted defender Cale Makar (24), who plays like a striker, and goal getter Mikko Rantanen (26). “You learn a lot there,” says Malgin. “It’s exciting to watch them. Like MacKinnon skating and racing through everything.”

If you play for the defending champion, are you thinking about winning the Stanley Cup? “That is of course everyone’s goal,” says the fast striker. “Of course that would be incredible. But there’s still a long way to go.” The first opponent is the Seattle Kraken, who qualified for the playoffs in their second season.

Malgin missed the last qualifier through injury, but is optimistic he can return against Seattle. “Now it’s getting exciting. I’ve never played playoffs in the NHL. It’s definitely going to be an interesting experience for me.”

His future is still unclear. His contract is up. The ZSC hopes for a return. “He will have to ask himself: does he want to play third or fourth line in Colorado, where he seems to like it? Or will he return to take on a leadership role,” Lions sports director Leuenberger told the Tages- Announcer.

At the ZSC one has to hope in vain. Malgin has found he can compete at the NHL level and is more confident. “I think I’ve had a good season here and I’ve gotten better.” As a restricted free agent, his rights in the NHL remain with Colorado.
