Nico Hischier and his brother Luca spent hours as children in the underground parking garage of their home in Naters USA. They fought hot duels on roller skates. The brother, who was four years older, usually had the upper hand, so that little Nico sometimes raged because he still had to learn how to lose. And still the brothers push each other in summer training.
Luca is still ahead in one area: the titles. Nico also received a championship medal when he played 15 qualifying matches at SCB in 2015/16 as a 16-year-old. But Luca has already won two championships (2016 and 17 with SCB) and is currently chasing the No. 3 title with Biel in the playoff final against Servette.
“Luca has struggled with so many injuries. And always came back,” says Nico, who watched several Biel playoff games from a distance. “It gives me great pleasure that he can now deliver such performances. He deserves it. He’s a very good hockey player.”
Luca earns a fraction of Nico’s
Outside of Switzerland, Luca, who was only able to visit his brother abroad during the 2018 Olympic break, is known only to those in the know. And even if wages aren’t disclosed here, it’s clear that he earns only a fraction of his brother’s salary. Nico is with the New Jersey Devils in the third season of his 8-year, average $7.25 million contract.
Not only in the underground car park did the younger brother Hischier suffer nasty defeats, but also for a long time in New Jersey. In his freshman year, the Devils qualified for the playoffs. But then they had to go down for four seasons. A year ago, Hischier & Co. 40 points away from a playoff spot.
But now everything is different. The team on the outskirts of New York has 49 points more and has long qualified for the knockout phase.
Would Hischier have believed such a turnaround possible a year ago? “I already believed that we would make the play-offs,” he replies. “But I was also surprised that we are so far ahead.” As for the reasons for the huge increase, he says: “We have gained confidence and realize that we are a good team when we play hockey. Each individual has evolved. In addition, new players have come in who fit perfectly. The goalkeepers are also important. And what also helped: Almost everyone stayed healthy this season. »
Are 100 points possible for Nico Hischier?
Wallis is also playing his best season. Not only is he one of the best strikers in the league defensively, but with 31 goals, 49 assists and 80 points, he has shattered his previous bests from the previous year (21/39/60).
Chosen number 1 in the 2017 draft, the center just keeps getting better. “I hope that much more is possible,” says Hischier. “My goal is simply to be the best player I can be for my team.” Can he reach the magic mark of 100 points? “I certainly hope so. But I don’t think too much about that.”
At least since robust Appenzell goalkeeper Timo Meier was brought in from San Jose shortly before the trade deadline, it’s clear that the Devils can be counted on now and for years to come.
That also means that the Hischier brothers may never play together at a World Cup because the talented Devils are probably regularly busy with the playoffs. The Brother Act collapsed a year ago. Luca was involved in the preparations for the World Cup, but had to give up due to illness. “Playing together at a World Cup would be something you would never forget for the rest of your life. It was always our big dream,” says Nico.
“The Mail Goes Off There”
Even without the national team, he has Swiss around him. On the one hand, there are often visitors from home. And with the Devils there are also Meier, Hischier’s buddy Jonas Siegenthaler and sometimes goalkeeper Akira Schmid. Has raclette already established itself as a new team meal? “When we played in Washington, Jonas showed us a Swiss restaurant. We ate raclette there with part of the team and the equipment supervisors.”
The playoffs are on the menu starting next week. Hischier & Co. have to deal with arch-rival New York Rangers. “It will definitely be a super series,” says the Swiss star. “Everyone on our team is looking forward to it. Jersey doesn’t like New York. And New York doesn’t like New Jersey. This is a real derby. These are always cool games. Here comes the mail.”
Besides his dream to play at a World Cup with his brother, Nico has another goal: to win the Stanley Cup. After all, he has some catching up to do with Luca when it comes to titles.
