The Swiss gymnasts just missed a team medal in fourth place at the European Championships in Antalya (door). Noe Seifert and Florian Langenegger are in the all-around final, plus four appearances in the apparatus final.
The Swiss showed an impressive reaction after a disappointing 20th place at the World Cup in Liverpool last year. The minimum goal of qualifying for the World Cup in Antwerp (September 30 to October 8) – a 13th place is required for this – is achieved without any problems. However, more could have been done. The gap with the third-placed British is only 0.632 points.
Shoot heavy on the ground
The Swiss award a medal on the horizontal bar, on which both Seifert and Taha Serhani fall. It could have been, as the worst of the four results per country is discarded. But that’s how Seifert’s 12,600 points count. The 24-year-old from Aargau took another fall on the rings as he landed, and Moreno Kratter grabbed the mat with his hand on the jump. In addition, an element does not count for Seifert on the pommel horse, the judges reject the appeal.
On the horizontal bar, where he finished fifth at the European Championships last year, Seifert calculated that he had the best chance of participating in the final. But he can take comfort in the fact that he’ll be fighting for the medals (top 8) on bars on bars and surprisingly on floor over the weekend. He qualified fourth for the final on bars with bars and even third on floor. Returning Eddy Yusof (8th) is also in the final on bars with bars, while 20-year-old European Championship debutant Luca Giubellini (8th) makes the top 8 on vault.
Although Seifert’s total of 80,832 points is slightly below his potential, he qualifies in 13th and Florian Langenegger (80,798) in 15th for the all-around final on Thursday, in which 24 gymnasts will compete. Wednesday is the qualification for the women. (SDA)
