Stan Wawrinka is still on fire at 38 years old.

A loud cheer echoed through the Monte Carlo tennis arena. Stan Wawrinka (38) has just defeated his 12-year-old opponent Tallon Greek track in three sets and thus qualified for the sixteenth finals of the ATP 1000 tournament. Wawrinka’s relief can be seen after the two and a half hours of attrition – but he smiles deftly at the effort.

Joy prevails

De Romand has been battling from injury to injury for several years and has a long period of suffering. But now, at 38, he seems to be getting back to his level. Wawrinka himself gives the reason for his stamina: “I still like to play in important places.”

Wawrinka is a veteran of the tour, a veteran who has seen it all since his debut 20 years ago. He won 16 tournaments, including three Grand Slams. Wawrinka’s only bad luck: he plays tennis at the same time as Roger Federer (41). For almost his entire career, he was overshadowed by the great Swiss tennis maestro.

That Wawrinka is still burning is evidenced by his challenge to the competition after beating Greek track: “I know that if I’m fit I can beat a lot of players on the tour.”

Wawrinka can prove that on Wednesday. In the sixteenth final of Monte Carlo, the American Taylor Fritz (25) is the current number ten in the world ranking.

“A man who sometimes loses, but never fails”

The fact that Wawrinka again plays the role of underdog against Fritz will not affect the Romand. It seems that he wants to relive the last years of his career to the fullest, but does so with a healthy dose of ambition and perseverance.

“A man who sometimes loses but never fails,” Blick tennis expert Heinz Günthardt recently said of Wawrinka. He is a man who gives his all in every match, set, game, point and shot because he knows nothing else, continues Günthardt.

Above all, Wawrinka is now a man who, at 38, wants to show everyone what he still has in him. (bjl/nsa)
