A distant quote from SRF man Sascha Ruefer in the Nati documentary “The Pressure Game” sparked much discussion over Easter. After Ruefer himself has already commented on this, documentary maker Simon Helbling (37) has now also issued a statement.
“In fact, the controversial sentence has been included in a rough draft,” says Helbling in this. The filmmaker then goes on to explain how the quote got there in the first place: “An interview for a documentary is broken down into a compilation of single sentences, with no questions from the interviewer or additional information. The editors then cut these sentences. For example, Sascha Ruefer’s statement, which was said after the actual interview, ended up in the edited version.”
“Management measures are in effect”
According to Helbling, control mechanisms with regular editorial approvals by the interviewees, but also by SRG and SFV, were part of the production. This mechanism also made Ruefer aware of the sentence.
“When Sascha Ruefer pointed out to us that the sentence could be misunderstood and that it also fell off-the-record, we removed it. The controls worked as intended,” says Helbling.
Helbling regrets that afterwards there was a lot of excitement and a stressful situation for Sascha Ruefer. (byl)
