Alexander Kershakov celebrates one of his 30 goals for Sbornaja at the 2014 World Cup.

92 caps, 30 goals – that’s Alexander Kerzhakov’s record in the Sbornaja. He still shares the title as Russia’s record scorer with the still active Artem Dzyuba (34). After the outbreak of war in Ukraine, he decided to leave the country.

The former top striker, who also paid a six-month flying visit to FCZ during his career and won the Uefa Cup (2007) with Sevilla, spoke clearly against him in an interview with the Russian journalist Nobel Arustamyan (quoted via novayagazeta.eu). af: “If I were asked about my greatest wish, I would only wish that there would be no war. In the world, in general.”

left Russia out of fear

Every day he saw news that made him aware of the magnitude. He describes the situation in Russia as difficult. Fear also played a role in the decision to leave the country. Yet he does not want to describe his departure as ’emigration’. He is currently in Dubai with his family.

He also alludes to the fact that one cannot freely express one’s opinion in Russia. “It’s very hard to speak in a way that doesn’t have any impact,” he says deeply. Kershakov speaks of a “major problem” in the country. He does not understand how it can come to this in a “modern and progressive society”.

This is probably one of the reasons Kershakov says he and his family did not leave Russia “to distance themselves from their homeland”. Will and when will Kerzhakov return to Russia with his family?

The former footballer is currently trying his hand at coaching. In this regard, he was employed by Cypriot Premier League side Karmiotissa until April 1, but was sacked less than two months after his appointment after seven games and just one win. (dti)
