On Tuesday, the national team will start preparations for the World Cup in Riga and Tampere (12-28 May) in Visp. Patrick Fischer (47) has called up 24 players for the first week. With Ambri striker Johnny Kneubühler (26), there is only one newcomer.
“Johnny has made a positive impression on me this season,” said Fischer in the association’s press release. “He played consistently well, is a fast runner and brings a very high level of intensity to the game.”
The longest-serving player in Fischer’s squad is 39-year-old HCD captain Andres Ambühl with 300 caps, followed by Romain Loeffel (116), Lukas Frick (73) and Michael Fora (72).
Aeschlimann is still injured
Sandro Aeschlimann (28) is not in the selection for the first week. The Davos goalkeeper is currently recovering from injury and will join the side at a later date should his recovery allow.
Three players are not available for the national team for the World Cup: Tristan Scherwey (31, Berne) and Mirco Müller (28, Lugano) are missing for family reasons, Reto Berra (36, Fribourg) does not feel like playing for a World Cup after his back surgery fit enough.
SCB defender Ramon Untersander (32) gave his national farewell. “I have always considered it a great privilege to play for Switzerland. During my career, thanks to Swiss ice hockey, I have been able to see a lot of the world, experience a lot and benefit from very good coaches as a junior and as an active player in all meetings and tournaments. I really appreciated that,” explains the man from the Rhine Valley. “There are some special memories, including participating in two Olympic Games and winning silver at the 2018 World Cup. Health reasons have now led me to have resigned.” And national coach Lars Weibel (48) says: “Ramon has done a lot for the national team and for Swiss ice hockey and has always represented Switzerland very well. I want to thank him very much on behalf of Swiss Ice Hockey.”
Cereda as an assistant coach
In addition to head coach Patrick Fischer, Tommy Albelin (58) will also be used as an assistant coach again. At the start of the World Cup preparation, Ambri coach Luca Cereda (41) is also there as an assistant coach. He supports Fischer and Albelin until Marcel Jenni (49) joins the team after the U18 World Cup. As a future U20 coach, Jenni is now part of the national team. Weibel: “We are delighted that Luca Cereda is joining the national team for the first time as an assistant coach. The cooperation with the club coaches is very valuable to us. Both parties can benefit from this exchange.”
The Swiss will play the first tests against Slovakia in Visp USA (Friday, April 14 at 7:45 PM) and in Porrentruy JU (Saturday, April 15 at 5:00 PM), then play a second time in Visp (Friday, April 21 at 5:00 PM), April at 7:45 pm) and in Lausanne VD (Saturday, April 22 at 5:00 pm) against France.
