Yellow pregrowth bird sees red

Basel coach Heiko Vogel grabbed the ball in the 29th minute of the game against YB and lashed out at Ref Urs Schnyder. Soon after, he sees yellow.

First, Heiko Vogel tries not to be vulnerable. In the SRF interview, he praises the game and the teams, then simply says, “One person didn’t have the quality.” Everyone knows who he means. But when asked by the SRF interviewer, Vogel says only that it is pure suspicion that referee Urs Schnyder is involved.

At the press conference he then leaves this reluctance behind him. “I just think it’s sad that one person didn’t fit into the game. That was the referee. He was overwhelmed. And they have to explain the VAR to me again. I don’t understand him anymore. If that wasn’t handball, I don’t understand the world more. That would have been a penalty. With a 4:3 to play over ten minutes… »

But which scenes upset Vogel so much?

  • On the one hand, there is the early penalty when Marwin Hitz fouls Meschack Elia. Of course the keeper tries to prevent the crash. But if you storm out of the box like that, you accept a collision and with it a penalty. Even though the touch was ultimately minimal. It was enough for Schnyder. And because it exists, VAR Esther Staubli does not intervene either. Justifiably.
  • Second, FC Basel claimed a yellow card against Ulisses Garcia when he grabbed Michael Lang by the shoulder after a losing tackle to prevent the counter-attack. Must have been yellow. And with that yellow-red. Basel is here. However, the VAR is not allowed to intervene because it is not a red card.
  • The third is Joel Monteiro’s handball after an FCB corner in the 78th minute. The ball actually flies to the YB striker’s hand, which is also not on the body. There are hardly any arguments against a penalty according to the rules. But that’s another scene where there’s a whistle and sometimes there isn’t. And hardly anyone knows why. This time there was no whistle, although the majority of the VAR would have intervened. That would have been necessary anyway…

Bird scrambles past yellow-red

Despite the controversial scenes: Basel didn’t lose because of that, but because YB just has more quality overall. And also because the Baselers do little with their behavior to subconsciously pull the referee on their side. The constant nagging that starts with the boss is not a valid means of running the game. Schnyder has had enough of Vogel’s moans after half an hour and warns the FCB coach when he complains like a man possessed with the ball in his hands. The one with the ball is an extra unfortunate image. And when he demonstratively throws it away after the warning, Vogel can count himself lucky that Schnyder wasn’t looking anymore.

Three yellow cards in three different competitions

Vogel is a repeat offender. Because this yellow was the third since he is back in Basel. “It is not the goal to get yellow every time,” said Vogel after the warning in Lucerne. We conclude: target missed.
