Europe’s largest women’s sporting event is coming to Switzerland. 17 years after the men’s national team, the women will get their home EM in 2025. What that means, explain three former internationals who were in the middle of Euro 2008.
Hakan Jakin (46): «The EM 2008 in-house was a big highlight. It was topic of conversation number one. The anticipation for the home EM was huge months in advance, the whole country was euphoric – it was no different for us players. The frustration was all the greater when we were eliminated in the group stage. I am very happy that Switzerland has now been awarded the 2025 European Women’s Championship. I like to treat all Swiss to it. Such a big event melts together. It’s going to be great.”
Ludovic Magnin (43): “An EM in your own country is the best thing for a football player. For me it was the most special, the most beautiful tournament. You play for Switzerland in Switzerland, in front of your family, your friends, in your stadiums. Maybe our expectations were too high at the time tense and the pressure was a bit high. We definitely did not find the right balance. The fact that we are now organizing the European Women’s Championship in 2025 is huge. Personally, I am especially happy for my former FCZ companions Marion Daube and Inka Grings. Marion and her crew have done a great job. Women’s football has already made great strides and this European Championship will give another real boost.”
Calm Barnetta (37): “A World Cup or European Championship is always a big deal, wherever it takes place. But playing in your own country, where you are at home and know all the stadiums, is the best. The anticipation is even greater, that will also be the case with the national women’s team. The pressure? You always have that at a World Cup or European Championship anyway. Perhaps even more in your own country. Simply because you want to show your own fans what you can do. It didn’t go the way we wanted it to at the time. But it wasn’t the pressure, it was more the injuries and missed opportunities. But the home EM can also induce and inspire euphoria. The hosts, England and the Netherlands, have won the last two European Women’s Championships. Let’s hope that bodes well for Switzerland in 2025.”
