FC Barcelona was charged on March 10 on suspicion of bribery by referees. Now the club is blowing a bizarre statement about the counter-offensive.
As a reminder, former presidents Josep Maria Bartomeu, Sandro Rosell and former executives Oscar Grau and Albert Soler are accused of influencing referees for years through José Maria Enriquez Negreira, the former vice president of the refereeing committee. Negreira herself was also charged. Barça insist the money was paid for advisory services.
Has League President Tebas Provided False Evidence?
Now the mud fight between Barcelona and the Spanish league goes into the next round. And keeps getting crazier. Spanish newspaper “La Vanguardia” headlined on Monday that league boss Javier Tebas deliberately presented false evidence to the prosecution to indict Barça. The accusation is so serious that FC Barcelona issued a public statement asking Tebas to resign.
The club wanted to express its “anger, indignation and disgust” at the “impact of the information”. They describe themselves as “victims of a media campaign for events that never happened”. The newspaper report should “alert all clubs in LaLiga”, as it also reports on practices “in no way compatible with the office of president”. As league boss, Tebas usurped powers to which he was not entitled. “For reasons of dignity and respect for the office of league president, Mr. Tebas should resign.”
Of course, it didn’t take long for Tebas to post on Twitter. He submits documents to prove that everything went well. This theory is even supported by the Barça-related newspapers “Sport” and “Mundo Deportivo”. Instead of questioning the president of the association, both media question the report of “La Vanguardia”. Meanwhile, Tebas demands that the newspaper print a correction of events.
Who is speaking the truth now? Unclear. The only thing that seems clear is that the last word in this mud-throwing has not yet been spoken. And also clear: if the allegations are confirmed, one of the biggest scandals in football would be a fact. Or as UEFA president Ceferin put it in “Ekipa”: “It’s one of the worst accusations I’ve ever seen in football.” (par/dti)
