Daniil Medvedev underlines his top form in the final in Miami and wins in straight sets.
The decision between Medvedev, who moves up to fourth in the ranking, and the South Tyrolean comes at the end of the first set when the 27-year-old from Moscow wins four games in a row from 5: 5 to 2: 0 in the second round. For Medvedev it is the 19th ATP title in the 32nd final. In Florida he failed in the quarterfinals the past two years, he never got further.
After a difficult year last year, he is back in top shape. The discussions about the eligibility of Russian players to participate in the ATP Tour do not seem to burden the 2021 US Open champion (anymore). Medvedev has won 25 of 26 matches and four tournaments since the disappointing Australian Open. This makes him the most successful player of the year. His only defeat was two weeks ago in the Indian Wells final against Carlos Alcaraz.
In Miami, the Spaniard lost to Jannik Sinner in the semifinals. He will therefore have to relinquish his place as number 1 in the world to Novak Djokovic, who was not allowed to enter the US because he did not have a Covid vaccination. After Miami two years ago (against Hubert Hurkacz), former junior skier Sinner also lost his second final at the Masters 1000 level, but returned to the top ten. (SDA/dti)
