Forced break for Stefan Bissegger: De Thurgau is sidelined for six weeks after a fall. He will have surgery on Wednesday.

It’s a rollercoaster ride of emotions. In a few weeks, maybe just a few days, Stefan Bissegger (24) will become a father for the first time. He and his wife Céline are really looking forward to it. At the same time, Bissegger is also sad.

Why? Because he broke his left wrist after a fall in the one-day race “Dwars door Vlaanderen”. “It all happened very quickly. A driver in front of me swerved and I landed on the ground. My hand must have been broken trying to break the fall. Maybe someone ran over it.”

Bissegger missed his biggest goals of the first half of the season: the Tour of Flanders (Sunday) and especially Paris-Roubaix (next Sunday), also known as Hel van het Noorden. In between, next Wednesday, he will go under the knife. “I’ve been out the window for six weeks. It’s relentless as my form picked up, I would have been ready.”

“We’re going to master this”

Bissegger has to reorient himself, the World Cup (August) and European Championship (September) are becoming even more important. But first he looks forward to the birth of his child. “I would have been there anyway, I would have given up every race for it. But now of course I have more time at home.”

Unfortunately, Bissegger said he can’t support Celine the way he would like. “Recently I noticed how difficult it is to open a bottle with one hand. And cooking, which I like to do, isn’t easy either. But we’ll get through it.”
