Let’s think big instead of “Yes, then stop”!

“How nice would that be”, says Blick sports director Steffi Buchli about the Swiss Olympic dream.

The sports world in Switzerland. In the end we – I can’t say it any other way – screwed up the beginning. The electorate has rejected all Olympic efforts in Switzerland. The projects were too big for the Swiss, our streets too narrow, our ambitions too high. Others should do that.

But in the end they didn’t want to anymore. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) shouted “Volunteers!” and the world vanished. Games were unthinkable without investing billions in infrastructure. The Olympic megalomania had a deterrent effect.

Now it has apparently become so difficult to find locations for the Winter Games that the IOC is now actively trying to convince countries that they are suitable. A good starting point for negotiations. The umbrella organization is under pressure and has actively approached Switzerland.

Our answer? A subdued “Yes, stop then”, we check. We dress up. Understandable. Swiss Olympic will first want to convince itself that a reasonable path is really a serious option. Spill instead of blocks. Small and fine, instead of celebrated gigantism.

Imagine: the sports world as a guest in Switzerland. If the IOC gives corresponding assurances that it is reasonable, Swiss Olympic should certainly consider a candidacy. A lasting celebration of winter sports and Switzerland in the middle of it all. Of course, we would still have to stretch to the ceiling. But: how nice would that be, let’s think big!
