Rightly thought: a 7-0 victory in Liechtenstein could not save the job of Icelandic national coach Arnar Thor Vidarsson.

After a disappointing start to the European Championship qualifier, Icelandic national coach Arnar Thor Vidarsson has lost his job.

The Football Association of Iceland announced that the decision has been made to take the difficult but necessary step to remove the 45-year-old from his position. The search for a successor is now starting so that he can prepare for the next international matches in the summer.

Vidarsson has been Iceland’s national coach since the end of 2020. Under his auspices, Iceland was a far cry from the results that the tiny North Atlantic island had achieved sensationally at the 2016 European Championship and then at the 2018 World Cup years ago. Last week, the team started qualifying for Euro 2024 in Germany with a 3-0 defeat in Bosnia-Herzegovina. This was followed by a 7-0 win in Liechtenstein. (SDA)
