Five games, five wins. Roman Bürki made a record start in the MLS with his St. Louis City SC.
Last season you couldn’t find St. Louis in the table. The newly created franchise has been around since 2019, but had to wait longer than expected for its first season due to the pandemic. The wait was worth it. Roman Bürki’s team started the season better than any other team.
From nothing to master’s candidate?
Globetrotter Lutz Pfannenstiel, known as an SRF expert and previously also a team planner in Düsseldorf, took on the task of assembling a team for the MLS. The selection value is estimated on transfermarkt.ch at just over 20 million francs – the lowest value in the league.
However, the newly assembled team has not acted like an outsider so far. Initially, St. Louis started better than any other newly entered franchise. Besides LA Galaxy (1996) and Sporting Kansas City (2012), they are now the only MLS team to start a season with five wins. The best goal difference of +11 sets the starting record for St. Louis.
St. Louis is mostly credited for being able to win the away game at Real Salt Lake 4-0, which was difficult due to the altitude. The table lists the team as the sovereign leader.
A little burki for brunch
Right in the middle is Roman Bürki, who went 288 days without a serious fight before his league debut with St. Louis and had not played regularly in over two years. But the Swiss goalkeeper is ready for his debut. Most recently, he kept two clean sheets, shone with a strong reflex against Real Salt Lake – and led the motley crew onto the pitch as captain.
“To be honest, after our first friendly match I knew how much quality we have,” Burki said on the competition’s official website of his team’s upward trend. Only the competitors in the MLS are currently surprised. (dti)
