Roman Kostomarow is on the mend.

This news caused the sports world to sit up and take notice: Roman Kostomarow, the 2006 Russian Olympic figure skating champion, was hospitalized on January 10 with pneumonia. His health continued to deteriorate – he even had to be put into an induced coma. Both feet and one hand were amputated to save the ex-athlete’s life.

The Russian is now on the mend. Kostomarov was taken off the ventilator and is fully conscious. However, he had to relearn everyday things like chewing and eating, as reported by the “Sportexpress”. And the 46-year-old also needs support when sitting.

No further operations or amputations are currently required. Kostomarow would need medical care for a few more weeks, as there was a risk of organ failure after blood poisoning and taking all the medications. (tired)
