While the personnel changes among the FCB pros cause a lot of commotion, Basel president David Degen quietly initiates a spectacular transfer of a special kind. The FCB boss stripped Zurich arch-rival Theo Karapetsas (32) and appointed him head of FCB women’s football.
It’s a transfer hammer: because the previous FCZ women’s boss turns from the record champions, Champions League participants and double winners to the mediocre FCB, who have never become champions in women’s.
Karapetsas describes that Heliane and Ancillo Canepa were surprised when he informed the FCZ presidential couple of the change. “But we parted on good terms. I openly explained my decision to them.”
“The potential is greater at FCB”
It was a process that took weeks. Because the resident of Zurich with Greek roots wants to know exactly what awaits him at Red-Blue from Degen. “There were several conversations over the course of a month and a half. It was important for me to know what FCB’s vision is and whether it fits my ideas,” says Karapetsas, adding: “Even at FCZ, the potential is not yet exhausted. But at FCB I see even more possibilities.”
Now the ex-professional of GC and Wohlen commutes daily from Fällanden ZH, where he lives with his wife and 18-month-old son, to St. Jakob-Park. Here Karapetsas has an office at the branch and is in close contact with the bosses around Degen.
Is Basel just bringing in money to catch up on sleepy development? Even on a million dollar budget you could easily be a league croesus, strengthen yourself and play for titles right away. A purely professional company would also be new to the league of working female soccer players.
Expansion to professional exploitation is not foreseen
Karapetsas brushes him off and says: “Money helps, but it’s not everything. Empowering FCB women is a total project. It’s also about more girls playing football in the region, for example.”
Even a professional company is not the goal. “The commitment of the players is already at a professional level,” says Karapetsas. It makes more sense to optimize the preconditions so that the players can get their recovery time despite sports and work. As with FCZ, Karapetsas has already introduced multi-year contracts for more security at FCB.
A performance at the Joggeli is no longer unthinkable. And the first championship title? Karapetsas formulates his challenge to the top clubs Zürich and Servette as follows: “We want to play at the front in the future, be among the top teams and fight for the title in the play-offs.”
