Sentenced to a fine: Nelson Piquet.

Three-time Formula 1 world champion Nelson Piquet must pay a large fine for his racist and homophobic derailments. A court in his native Brazil ordered him to pay five million Brazilian reals (approximately CHF 870,000).

The money is intended to benefit the fight against racism and for equality in the LGBTQ+ movement and will be distributed among the appropriate funds.

Apologies and justification at the same time

In a November 2021 interview, Piquet racially insulted record world champion Lewis Hamilton.

The 70-year-old Brazilian later apologized, but tried to justify his choice of words. A passage from the interview was later made public in which Piquet denigrated Hamilton in a homophobic context. (SDA)
