Julian Nagelsmann is on the brink of extinction at Bayern Munich.

Nagelsmann out, Tuchel in: The coach change at the German record champion is now causing a stir in the national team. During the press conference ahead of Germany’s upcoming friendly against Peru, the topic loomed everywhere.

In addition to national coach Hansi Flick (58), Nagelsmann’s predecessor at Bayern, DFB captain and Bayern player Joshua Kimmich (28) were also present at the press conference this afternoon. Both largely blocked questions about Nagelsmann-Aus. “We were very surprised by the headlines. But Bayern has not commented so far, out of respect for Julian and Bayern I do not want to say anything,” said Hansi Flick. The club has since confirmed the message.

Kimmich with praise for Nagelsmann

Joshua Kimmich was initially similarly covered, referring to Bayern’s pending confirmation. However, when asked by a journalist, it became clear that he actually thinks a lot of his (still) coach: “Julian Nagelsmann is an excellent coach. I’ve had some really top coaches in my career. But he’s easily in the top 3 of my best coaches.”

The importance of this statement becomes clear when you look at Kimmich’s previous list of coaches. There you will find names of successful coaches such as Pep Guardiola, Carlo Ancelotti, Jupp Heynckes and also Hansi Flick. However, Kimmich has a special bond with Nagelsmann. The 28-year-old was regarded as Bayern’s closest confidante and extended arm of the ousted coach.

Focus on the national team

That is why the headlines about Nagelsmann’s dismissal do not leave him cold, he hinted at the press conference. “Such discussions naturally worry you when it comes to the coaching position in your own club. It’s the coach you work with every day,” said the midfield strategist.

The subject should not play a role during the training and during the game. “But there’s also plenty of rest time where you’re in the room, reading and observing one thing or the other. That naturally keeps you busy,” continues Kimmich. However, the focus for him is on the upcoming games with the national team. (mbi)
