The Spaniard arrives as the favorite and as the recent champion of Indian Wells, where he brought back the number one player in the world whom he lost in January in favor of Djokovic
Argentinian tennis player Facundo Bagnis will be the first opponent of the Spaniards Carlos Alcaraz at the tournament in Miami, second Masters 1,000 of the season, with a win Felipe Meligeni Alves in search of the second round where the current champion is waiting for him, in a day that also meant goodbye Albert Ramos in the first round.
Bagnis won his debut 6-3, 1-6, 6-4, regaining his strength in the third set after losing control in the second. So Alcaraz, the first seed, already has a rival on Friday for his debut in Miami, where he was declared champion last year.
The Murcian also arrives as favorite as the recent Indian Wells champion, where he regained the world number one he lost in January to Novak Djokovic. The Serb is once again the big absentee in this second North American appointment and without him Rafael Nadal neither, Alcaraz reasserts himself as the opponent to beat. First for Bagnis, who already lost to the Spaniard last year in Umag.
Meanwhile, Ramos could not beat Switzerland’s Marc-Andre Huesler in three straight sets 6-7(4), 7-6(2), 6-3, setting up another premature finish like the one in Indian Wells. The Catalan also fell in his first match of the second Masters 1,000 season despite taking the first set and holding serve to win the match in the second.
Huesler forced a third set in sudden death and ended there by dropping serve to the Spaniard, who received three breaks against an opponent he never played against to end his career in Miami, where his best result was the round of 16 in 2013.
