The Executive Council of the International Ice Hockey Federation IIHF has decided in a regular meeting that Russia and Belarus will remain excluded from all events during the 2023/2024 tournament season.
After the start of the Russian invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, the IIHF gave in to pressure from the sub-federations and banned the aggressor Russia and its ally Belarus from the World Cup, including all IIHF-sanctioned events in the two countries.
With this, the IIHF sets a good example. Other major sports federations have pledged to allow Russian and Belarusian athletes and selections to compete again in major international events in the near future.
Sweden comments on the decision
Oddly enough, the IIHF justified its decision with “security concerns” due to the geopolitical situation. The Russian offensive war in Ukraine and the role of Belarus were not explicitly mentioned as reasons. However, individual sub-federations had already leaked that they would not think of allowing their athletes to participate in tournaments where Russians and Belarusians are also admitted.
The Swedish Ice Hockey Federation responded to the IIHF’s decision: “A good and correct decision that we consider absolutely necessary.”
