Fan escalation in the Dutch Eredivisie. In the northern derby between Groningen and Heerenveen, a home fan attacks his own player. After a short break, the game is played to the end.
After 80 minutes, some inveterate idiots in the Groningen sector have seen enough. The winner of the 2015 Dutch Cup is 2-0 down against their arch-rival. Groningen is only 17th in the ranking, six points behind the savings bank. The first relegation from the top division since 1998 is threatened.
Out of frustration, some “home fans” want to storm the field, but are stopped by security forces.
Then comes the incredible scene: Jetro Willems ventures into battle as one of the Groningen players, wants to calm down the fans – and even gets a hard blow to the head! Maps then pull the player out of the fray. Willems briefly returns, while fellow home fans apologize to the player for the lone wolf’s stupidity.
The victim responds with humor – and reports the crime
The referee then interrupted the game for about 15 minutes before it ended with Jetro Willems on the field. The 28-year-old left back, who played for Newcastle United and Eintracht Frankfurt in his career and was most recently a teammate of YB star Cédric Itten at Greuther Fürth, remains unharmed on the scene.
After the game he can even smile at ESPN: “I’m from Rotterdam-South, I can take a beating.”
Which isn’t to say he’s letting the action rest. Both the club and the player have filed a complaint against the racket. (dti)
