Jan Kovar is Czech through and through. The EVZ captain loves the down-to-earth cuisine of his homeland. He has often told us how much he loves eating juicy steaks. But for a year and a half he has been denied this joy. For an incredible reason.
Flashback: In the fall of 2021, Kovar becomes infected with Corona. And after that nothing will be the same. Once the attacker has overcome the infection, he battles nausea every time he eats meat. “I got sick, I threw up more often,” the 32-year-old recalls. His body gives him very clear signals: “At a certain point I couldn’t even put a piece of meat in my mouth anymore. That may sound strange and is also difficult for me to explain.”
“I’m at peace with it”
From that moment on, Kovar left it alone and involuntarily became a vegetarian. On burger evenings with the team, he has the version without meat. The national player doesn’t really want to get used to it, “I thought it would return to normal at some point”. The Czech tries every now and then, also on the team trip to his home country after the last championship title. “I also co-own a steakhouse,” says Kovar, smiling, shaking his head. He spends an evening with his fellow players in his grill restaurant and pub “Comix” in Pilsen.
He can now take it with humor – although the aversion to meat has not disappeared to this day. “I’ve come to terms with it now,” he sighs. In the field of nutrition, he is now focusing on protein-rich alternatives. In cooperation with the performance center OYM, which feeds the Zug players, this is no problem. And nowadays you can also buy more and better replacement products in the supermarket.
Although he hopes to be able to eat a beloved steak again someday, Kovar feels as physically fit as he did when he ate meat. He started the playoffs strong, making three assists in game one against the SCRJ Lakers. Zug already leads 2-0 in the quarter-finals – thanks in part to the captain.
Because with Kovar you always get the convincing total package. And exactly what is needed. Goals, passes, cracking checks, defensive work and clearing for goal. The Czech, who played in the play-offs last year with four broken ribs, is not above anything. Instead, he always puts himself at the service of his team.
