“The burden I have to bear is great”

Always with full physical effort: classification rider Amir Abrashi here against Wouter Burger from Basel.

Amir Abrashi, 13 of your teammates’ contracts expire at the end of the season. There is currently no negotiation because Bill Pan is checking the business books on behalf of owner Fosun. How hard is it to concentrate on football in such a situation?
Amir Abashi:
It can be difficult for some if their contract ends in a few weeks. They don’t know if they have a future here, they lack certainty. Of course they are concerned.

Can you help as captain and leader?
I will try. I tell them over and over to stock up on everything now. For GC, but also for themselves, because no club in the world is interested in players who lose and don’t fight. Finding a new club is not obvious, even if you are transfer-free. I know what I’m talking about.

What do you mean?
When my contract with GC expired in 2015, I had only one offer on the table: from SC Freiburg in the second Bundesliga. In retrospect, it was a stroke of luck.

Why?
Those five and a half years in Freiburg were great. I still maintain good contacts there.

Going back to the leaderboard, you could also argue that your teammates are better off avoiding tackles to avoid getting injured.
It may be that one or the other advisor recommends this to his player. But I’m definitely the wrong person for that. I don’t believe in ‘avoiding duels’, as you can probably imagine.

Because of the way you play, you are called a terrier. An insult?
Absolutely not! I have seen many more talented footballers than myself in my career. But I am proud of what I have achieved. I have played 60 Bundesliga games with Freiburg and I am still an Albanian national player. That’s not bad for a boy from Bischofszell, is it?

For the boy from Bischofszell it continues at GC: besides Ndenge, you are the only one whose contract was extended before Sky Sun left. Did you have to hand over money?
Let’s put it this way: I signed on worse terms. But you don’t have to invite me to dinner right now. It’s alright. I am happy to add at least one more season for the standings.

Why did GC renew with you in the first place?
Why shouldn’t you have?

Because at 32 you probably wouldn’t have gotten nervous if you waited.
That’s right, I would have gone full throttle even without a signature. But since I’m seen as a captain as a leader and role model on and off the field, maybe they wanted to set an example. Anyway, I’m looking forward to it.

How is the atmosphere in the team?
The atmosphere is great, I’ve probably never seen such a great team as now. We all get along really well off the field. Occasionally we could fight a little more for each other on the field.

Besides Pusic, you are practically the only player with GC DNA. How do you deal with that?
There are other players who have ranking DNA, such as Giotto Morandi or the young Kacuri and de Carvalho. At the same time, Dominik Schmid has slowly become a leader, although he is not a GC boy. But I wish we had more players with GC roots in the future. The burden I have to bear is great. Last season was particularly bad. Sometimes I felt I had to be responsible for everything that happened on and off the field. I suffered from this pressure. This season I’m trying to let everything come a little less close to me.

And succeed?
phased. GC is very close to me. When we lose a game, it touches me deeply. Then I’m in a bad mood and the week is in the bucket. But if we win, I’ll be the happiest person in the world.

What are your wishes for the coming weeks?
Points.

Doesn’t that peace return to the campus?
It’s not even as restless as one would like to portray it outside. This is my seventh year at GC and I’ve been through much worse and more difficult times.
