National assistant Cavin gets coaching diploma in Italy

Vincent Cavin, Murat Yakin’s assistant coach at Nati, is completing his UEFA Pro Diploma course in Italy.

Three weeks ago he was in Marseille, two weeks ago in Florence, this week in Monza. “We visit different clubs and look over the shoulders of the respective coaches,” says Vincent Cavin (47). Our National Assistant is currently completing the UEFA Pro Diploma course in Italy. In Switzerland, Cavin would have had to wait at least a year for the course and would have had no guarantee of being hired. We only allow twelve trainers per course, which are determined in an assessment process. That is why, for example, Hakan Yakin (Schaffhausen) is following his coaching training in Turkey.

“In Italy there is more discussion about tactics”

Because the admission criteria in Italy are less strict and a UEFA exchange program allows the associations to invite a foreign coach, Cavin completes his training with the Italians. Together with the Italian world champions Daniele de Rossi (39) and Andrea Barzagli (41) and with other Calcio greats such as Alberto Aquilani (38) or Antonio Nocerino (37). Ex-superstar Alessandro Del Piero (48), also registered, canceled at short notice due to lack of time.

Cavin: «We have a great coaching education in Switzerland. But for me it’s a welcome opportunity to be here. It’s very interesting, I get a different insight into the company.” And what are the biggest differences between coach training in Switzerland and Italy? Cavin: “In Italy, tactical orientations are discussed much more and in more detail, but the training is less practical and less structured than here.” Great coaches such as Argentina’s world champion coach Lionel Scaloni, Marcelo Bielsa and Rafael Benitez have also visited.

« Long ago the land of catenaccio »

And what are the latest tactical trends from the land of European champions? “At the moment, there is intensive talk about man-to-man-pressing.” A kind of men’s coverage everywhere, as coach Gian Piero Gasperini has been doing at Atalanta for a long time.

Cavin was also very well received, although he ruined the World Cup participation with Nati Italy. “Of course it was an issue,” says Murat Yakin’s assistant, “but I haven’t been blamed for it. They think it was only their fault.” Will Cavin now take over the defensive training of the national team? After all, Italy is the land of defensive artists. “Italy is no longer just the country of the catenaccio,” says Cavin, “equal time is spent discussing the offensive.”
