The FCB players have a say in tactical matters!

FCB coach Heiko Vogel is open to the confrontation with Bratislava.

No, the man has nothing to hide!

Usually the last training sessions for international competitions are only open to the public for 15 minutes. Heiko Vogel made an exception for the round of 16 second leg against Slovan Bratislava. “You can watch the whole training,” the FCB coach tells the Swiss journalists.

Vogel will again appeal to the regular FCB

That his midfield terrier Taulant Xhaka (31) would be in the starting line-up could have been predicted even without training. After all, Vogel always relies on his experienced tribe. To Xhaka, to Marwin Hitz (35), to Michael Lang (32). Besides Fabian Frei (34), who has a back injury, the only players in FCB’s selection who are over 30. “We have the experience, why shouldn’t I use it?” Vogel asks.

The coach also involves his leading players in tactical issues. Asks if you are comfortable with the chosen system. And if not, everything can be turned inside out. “This shows that Heiko Vogel trusts us and that we can give him our honest opinion. When we feel comfortable, we carry it out. If not, he has other plans.”

Just don’t get a false sense of security

From the outside, the plan against Slovan is simple. A win is needed for quarter-final qualifiers. It doesn’t matter how. But it won’t be easy, says Xhaka: “It’s an uncomfortable team with a lot of experience. They give you the feeling that you have everything under control, then they score a goal.”

Just like in the first leg, when the Slovakian record champion equalized twice almost out of the blue. FCB failed to beat Slovan for the third time this season. In the autumn there was a defeat (0:2) and a draw (3:3) in the group stage.

Why does it work on Thursday? “Because we showed how it should be done in the first half,” says Xhaka. Coach Vogel adds: “Now you need two good halves.”

And a tactical plan that players feel comfortable with.
