Stan Wawrinka needs to pack his bags.

The ATP 1000 tournament in Indian Wells ends for Stan Wawrinka in the eighth finals. The Swiss (ATP 100) loses to the Italian Jannik Sinner (ATP 13) 1: 6, 4: 6.

Wawrinka’s defeat is mainly due to the lack of efficiency on break opportunities. The almost 38-year-old from Lausanne only uses one of his nine break balls. So he takes a 2-0 lead in the second set, but then loses four games in a row. When the score is 3:4, Wawrinka has two more chances to take the serve from his opponent, who is 16 years younger than him, but cannot use them.

On the other hand, Sinner isn’t particularly successful with break opportunities either. The Italian, who won against the French Richard Gasquet and Adrian Mannarino before the Wawrinka game, uses only four of his 14 breakballs.

For Wawrinka it is the third loss in a row after two wins against Sinner. He was eliminated in February in Rotterdam with a similar result (1:6, 3:6). Nevertheless, the West Swiss can be satisfied with his performance in the Californian desert: he will improve 14 places in the world ranking. (sda)
