Russian tennis player Anastasiya Potapova sparked outrage in Indian Wells.

Actually, Russian and Belarusian participants in the ATP and WTA tournament in Indian Wells (USA) start under a neutral flag. Russian Anastasija Potapova doesn’t take it that seriously.

The current number 28 in the world warms up in a shirt of Russian record holder Spartak Moscow before losing to American Jessica Pegula (WTA 3) in the third round. This jersey choice is causing outrage.

It is not uncommon for tennis stars to play in a shirt from another sport. Badboy Nick Kyrgios (ATP 22) often wears NBA teams basketball jersey, while Belarusian Wiktoryja Asaranka (WTA 14) supports her favorite team Paris Saint-Germain with her walk-in outfit. At Potapova, however, the team selection is particularly explosive due to the war in Ukraine and the guidelines in force. She herself remarked succinctly that she was just a fan of Spartak – nothing more than that.

Swiatek criticized – successfully

The current number one in the women’s world, the Pole Iga Swiatek, is critical: “To be honest, I was surprised. I thought she realized that even though she is a fan of the team, she cannot express her opinion at such times must declare.”

Swiatek is said to have finally sought talks with the WTA and demanded consequences. Those responsible should have assured her that they will now explain to other players that they are not allowed to publicly support a Russian team at this time. A relief for Swiatek. “On the other hand, I think that such a message should have been given much earlier.” (tired)
