“Actually, I’m a mountain man,” says racing driver Ralph Boschung (25). Now he has finally climbed the biggest mountain of his career: his first victory in Formula 2. “With the pressure mounting, I want to stay at the front.”
The first victory is a relief – Boschung is already driving his seventh F2 season. And that as a race unique. Vaud, born in Montreux with his Walliser mother and perfect Swiss German from his school days in Fribourg, is his own manager and collects his sponsor money himself.
That means several hundred thousand francs per year. In other words: His first victory cost many millions. “In my career I have already raised more than 10 million in sponsorship money,” he says. Boschung does not have wealthy parents, he says: “I’m not giving up.”
Shrill crypto star as a powerful sponsor
He is currently sponsored by Casa Andrea, a shipping group brand. And there’s a smiling face on his race car. What is this joke advertising? The portrait shows Swedish crypto millionaire Carl “The Moon” Runefeld (28). “I met him in Monaco and was able to get him excited about this special sponsorship. He loves motor racing,” says Boschung, adding with a laugh: “He’s just as crazy as I am.”
Now the crazy duo has a crazy plan: to bring Boschung into Formula 1. People are talking to a team, but a lot has to fit for a promotion. But actually, the Swiss has been circling the Formula 1 terrain for far too long. Many of his former opponents such as Leclerc, Norris, Zhou, Tsunoda, Latifi, de Vries, Schumacher, Albon, Russell, Sergeant or Piastri have long since been promoted to the premier class.
Why does the eternal F2 pilot still believe in F1? “Until now I’ve almost never had a full season, I never had the budget for it. Only now everything fits.”
A neck injury threatened his career
In fact, the years 2017 to 2022 are a succession of bankruptcies, breakdowns and accidents. He keeps missing races because he doesn’t have enough money. Rehabilitation helps. Boschung makes his comeback in Spa against medical advice because the sponsors want to see results. “The risk was worth it. I was immediately on the podium and only have occasional complaints in the morning.”
Boschung bites on. And continues to dream of Formula 1.
