Elvis Merzlinkins (28) temporarily left his Columbus Blue Jackets a few days ago due to concerns about a sick relative and flew to his homeland Latvia. Now the grandmother of the NHL goalie has passed away.
Merzlikins made this public on Monday in his Instagram story. So he shares a black and white photo of him posing with his grandmother in his arms. He writes RIP (rest in peace). He also posts an old photo on which the Latvian can be seen as a baby in his grandmother’s arms.
It’s unclear when Merzlinkins will return to his team. The Blue Jackets brought in Russian Daniil Tarasov (23) from the AHL as a temporary replacement.
Elvis Merzlikins guarded HC Lugano’s goal from 2013 to 2019 before retiring from the NHL. He played 149 games in his four seasons with the Blue Jackets. (byl)
