David Bettoni (51) is not allowed to speak yet. FC Sion has banned its new coach until the official media date on Thursday.
The man, who initially played in the lower leagues in Italy and France and later worked as an assistant to Zinedine Zidane at Real Madrid, has had his first training sessions. Bettoni met his new players in Riddes on Tuesday afternoon.
With Zidane, Bettoni achieved many successes in the Spanish capital, including two Spanish national titles (2017 and 2020) and three Champions League titles (2016, 2017 and 2018).
Carlos Forjanes observed Bettoni closely during his spell at Real Madrid. The journalist from the well-known daily newspaper “AS” talks about his career so far – and looks ahead for Blick.
Carlos Forjanes, what impressions did David Bettoni leave in Spain?
To be honest, I’d say not big on the general public. He was not a very exposed assistant coach. I’m sure he can walk the streets of Madrid without anyone recognizing him. At most one in a hundred people. I don’t mean that disrespectfully. He just knew that Zidane was the star and that it was his job to help him. He did not express himself in the media. He only started talking when the two men parted ways and David Bettoni wanted to start on his own as a coach. “AS” was the first medium to interview him in Spain.
How important was Bettoni in Zidane’s victories?
More than most people think. He took over the day-to-day work and “Zizou” was more of a manager who had an eye for the organization in general. Bettoni took care of the details, the technique, the training. Zidane ran the dressing room. But the coach closer to the stars was Bettoni.
Does he have what it takes to be a great head coach?
It’s still hard to say. His whole career was that of a shop assistant. He has successfully developed in a large institution like Madrid. But in a club that is not strong enough to stand on its own two feet, things are more complicated.
Why didn’t Bettoni get the chance to coach alone in France or Spain sooner?
I think he was waiting for him to make the move to a place he really likes. I also feel that his work was not very well known in Spain, as I said. Maybe some people were afraid to offer him a team. If something went wrong, he would most likely be reminded of his assistant status.
Do you think his experience with the Real Madrid stars will make him better with Mario Balotelli?
I doubt it. “Super Mario” remains “Super Mario”. I think even a Zidane could have problems with him. He’s a very special personality and I still expect David Bettoni to take that into consideration.
What can we expect in terms of playing style from FC Sion?
As far as I know he will bet on a double central axis in a 4-2-3-1 tactical formation. But always with an offensive focus. He likes the beautiful game, just like Zidane, but I think his vision on coaching will mainly be pragmatic. He is intelligent and courageous. Everything would have been a lot easier for him to change nothing, continue the comfortable life and cash in on Zinedine’s fame – or go on sabbatical with his family. I think Zion would do well to take a risk with him.
