On Saturday, her world is still fine. Aline Danioth shares photos of the beautiful Northern Lights on Instagram. “Grateful that I can experience moments like this,” she writes. Not knowing that she will suffer the next serious injury in Gällivare (Sd).
Everything is different on Sunday. At just 24 years old, Danioth suffered a serious injury for the sixth time in her career and tore her ACL for the fourth time. In a European Cup giant slalom. Instead of attacking the top of the world, she takes another heavy blow.
The slap in the neck is all the more bitter as Danioth is gradually working his way to the top of the world in the current season, more than just hinting at his potential. In the World Cup slalom, she is just a little short of the medal with a sixth place. She seems to finally be able to summon the potential that was told to her early on. Now this fall.
Early successes, early setbacks
Aline Danioth has been seen as a promising talent at Swiss-Ski from an early age. At a young age, she collected a total of five gold, one silver and three bronze medals at the Youth Olympic Games and three World Junior Championships. At the age of 17 she got her first chance at the World Cup and was crowned Swiss giant slalom champion at the end of that season in March 2016.
Then the first shock of injury. In December 2016, she tore her cruciate ligament for the first time at the World Cup giants of Sestriere. But she comes back strong. A good year later, Danioth can be found on the track again, he finishes 19th in the Lienz slalom for the first time and scores World Cup points. In the 2017/18 season, she underlined her reputation as a promise for the future by winning the European Cup slalom ranking.
Your path to the slalom ace seems mapped out. Danioth continues to progress and settle into the World Cup. On January 8, 2019, she was in the top 10 in the Flachau slalom for the first time and a month later she won World Cup gold in the team event with Wendy Holdener, Daniel Yule and Ramon Zenhousen. The highlight of her young career so far.
Duration of the first World Cup break: 322 days
Sestriere again – misfortune has stuck to her ski boots ever since
Danioth can carry the momentum of this success into next season. Before tearing her ACL for a second time at a parallel event – again in Sestriere – she has already made the top 10 in the slalom twice.
Since then, the injury witch has settled with Danioth. She will miss the 2020/21 season completely – during a training fall in October 2020 she tore her third cruciate ligament. “It was a very hard blow. I had a mess in my head and had to solve that first,” she says in Blick a month later. To clear her head, she then travels to Hawaii, where she continues to work on her comeback.
Duration of the second World Cup break: 710 days.
But the way back is not straight. In March 2021, it was announced that she would have to undergo knee surgery again. In the months before, she, who says her heart can’t handle it if she’s not allowed to ski, skied without a cruciate ligament. In Lenzerheide she is even the ancestor. To prolong her career, she decides to have surgery.
The fourth cruciate ligament tear – and the next operation?
We are now in the present – and have arrived at the next setback. With a 6th place in the World Cup slalom, Danioth can be satisfied with her best result ever, even with her eyes closed on the podium. She is overjoyed, finally she – the competitive type – can live out her love for the sport full throttle on the slopes. At the award ceremony, she beams all over her face.
And now, of all times, she is seriously injured again. Whether surgery is necessary has not yet been decided.
“It Feels Like a Nightmare”
Danioth poured her heart out on Instagram: “It feels like a nightmare.” She loves to ski, is always happy when she can be on the slopes. “I did what I could to live this life healthy for a few more years. Everything! And if I had one wish, that would have been it. I broke my knee again. It’s very hard for me to accept that. My focus is on my health, both physically and mentally. There is a lot of darkness in me right now, but I hope that sooner or later I will find some light again.”
The once promising ski talent has to fight back again. She has already proven several times that she can do it. It’s bitter that she has to prove it again.
