It was one of the big hits on Deadline Day. Joao Cancelo (28) moved from Manchester City to Bayern Munich on loan at the end of January after a disagreement with star coach Pep Guardiola.
Widely announced, the world looks very different about five weeks later. The Portuguese defender spent the last 90 minutes on the bench against Stuttgart, and the week before in the top match against Union Berlin it was only enough for a partial appearance. What’s happening there?
Can’t Cancelo take three back?
Bayern coach Julian Nagelsmann tries to clarify after the 2-1 win in Stuttgart. “We are not playing back four with the ball at the moment. It’s relatively easy to explain.” That’s great. The next frustration reduction follows training on Monday. As the local “Bild” reports, Cancelo seemed thoughtful in reservist training and hardly had any conversations with his colleagues. During the training game, however, he allegedly shot a bouncing ball with full force – so hard that it even flew over the office building on the Bayern training ground! There must have been some frustration.
Bayern welcome PSG in the hot round of 16 return legs on Wednesday. Defender Benjamin Pavard has been suspended after his red card. Just like against Stuttgart, 22-year-old Josip Stanisic will replace him as right center back. Cancelo will probably have to watch from the bench again. (tired)
