After defeating Varvara Gracheva (WTA 66) 6:3, 7:5, 20-year-old Kostjuk drops to her knees, crouches on the ground behind the baseline and sobs. The new number 40 of the WTA ranking then refused her opponent the traditional handshake at the net.
It is not the first time Kostjuk has not shaken hands. Already at the US Open last year, the Ukrainian left the Belarusian player Wiktoria Asarenka in nothing.
No pictures together either
She will not do that if she plays against an opponent from Russia, which has attacked Ukraine, or Belarus, which supports the invasion, she says. During the winner’s speech, Kostjuk gets emotional: “In the situation I am in now, it is something very special to win this title. I want to dedicate this title to Ukraine and to all the people who are fighting and dying now.”
Kostyuk did her thing. In addition to refusing to shake hands, she also refrained from taking pictures with Gracheva. (SDA)
