Goggia grumbles after weather change in Kvitfjell-Super-G

Sofia Goggia completed the Kvitfjell Super-G in heavy snow.

A crazy Super-G ends with a triple Ösi victory on Sunday. The sudden weather change after the first 20 riders made it possible. The snow stops, visibility improves, the slope gets faster.

Conditions that Sofia Goggia does not yet have. The Italian, number 16, beats the long-standing best time of Switzerland’s Jasmine Flury (29, number 1) and looks the sure winner – until the trio of Ortlieb (No. 31), Venier (No. 29) and Gritsch (No. 26) she falls off the pedestal. The 30-year-old is visibly pissed off.

“It’s a really weird race. We have three races in one,” says Goggia in an exasperated Eurosport interview. That’s when she’s thrown off the podium. “Look. The first 20 songs went down the slope with a lot of snow, it was stormy. And now I’m off the stage.”

“Driving in Criminal Circumstances”

Although she is pleased with her performance, that doesn’t take away her frustration: “The race has changed too much, unbelievable.” Since Saturday, the four-time downhill World Cup winner has been shrugging her shoulders in disbelief. “I feel good. But we drove under criminal conditions,” concludes Bergamaskin.

The anger is understandable, a fair race looks different. In the battle for the Super-G ball, Goggia wouldn’t have stood a chance even if he won. The gap to her compatriot Elena Curtoni is too big. The 32-year-old starts the last Super-G of the season in Soldeu (Andorra, March 16) with a lead of 19 points over Lara Gut-Behrami (31). (che)
