Jarl Magnus Riiber was the benchmark of everything at this year’s Nordic World Championships. The Norwegian combined athlete won all four gold medals. At the last game, however, it was not just his athletic achievements that caused discussions.
At the last hundred meters of the cross-country track (10 km), the 25-year-old suddenly stops and puts his hand to his forehead as if to check where his competition is. Then he bows and walks on.
Riiber enjoyed “extraordinarily beautiful view”
“Personally, I find that disrespectful,” complains German Julian Schmid (23). “Shit, I don’t understand that at all. He doesn’t need that.”
There is also criticism of Riiber’s action from his own camp. Teammate Jörgen Graabak (31) also thinks that “it would not have been necessary”. Riiber would have impressed enough in the race. But Graabak puts things into perspective: “If there’s a day when he can do it, it’s today.”
And what does Riiber himself say in his defense? “I reached the top of the hill and there was an extremely beautiful view and a lot of spectators, so I just had to stop and enjoy.” (che)
