From number 3 to keeper high flyer in Lucerne

Pascal Loretz (19) has been in the FCL target since early February.

Just looking hurts! With full force, Marius Müller hits the artificial turf in Thun, causing his shoulder to collapse under the weight of his 93 kilograms.

At the Cup-Out in the Bernese Oberland four weeks ago, FC Luzern not only lost the game, but also two goalkeepers: After Müller, his substitute Vaso Vasic injured the plastic pad.

The bad luck of Müller and Vasic is the bad luck of Pascal Loretz. Since then, the 19-year-old resident (in the club since 2016) has been guarding the FCL goal. And with success: in four games he was beaten only by the penalty point – each time after the intervention of the VAR. Crazy!

Loretz on the video screen: “Used correctly, it can make the game fairer. But I wouldn’t call him a friend just yet.”

There was no VAR intervention in last Sunday’s 1-0 home win against GC. And therefore no goal for Loretz. With his strong performance against the Hoppers, the six-foot-tall giant fueled memories of 2017: Lucerne’s coach at the time, Markus Babbel, replaced club legend David Zibung with a certain Jonas Omlin in the middle of the season. A courageous and unpopular decision, Zibung is a living legend in Central Switzerland due to his loyalty to the club. But a decision that paid off: for Omlin, who now guards the goal at Gladbach. And for the FCL, who have since received all three transfers from Omlin.

“It’s also fun with the U21”

Will history repeat itself five years later? Character head Marius Müller is also highly regarded by the club and the fans. Like Zibung, his demotion would be an earthquake for the keeper. Loretz smiles when asked, but refuses to provoke a declaration of war: “I like working with the professionals. It all went really fast, I started the year as number 3 behind Marius and Vaso. For me, the most important thing is that I play. Should that be in the U21 again later, no problem. It is also nice there.” Loretz is currently discussing with the FCL and his advisor Gezim Ibrahimi how to continue in the summer. If, as expected, it is not already the permanent place in Lucerne, then maybe a loan to the Challenge League.

However, in two or three years, the FCL goal breakthrough will be the first major career goal. And then? Do you want to do like Zibung and stay in central Switzerland forever? Or conquer the (goalkeepers) world like Omlin? Loretz: «I followed Jonas’ path closely. He’s a role model.” Another strong performance against FC Basel on Saturday would be Loretz’s next step in Omlin’s footsteps.
