Ticino’s hottest derby for 17 years takes place today

Pure stick fight: Ambri and Lugano meet in what is arguably the hottest derby since the quarter-finals of the 2006 play-offs.

The situation could hardly be more exciting. Two laps before the end of qualifying, seven teams are engaged in stick fights. In the duel for the last place in the top 6 and direct playoff qualification, the decision could already have been made on Thursday evening if the champions from Zug (at home against leader Servette) score at least two points more than the troubled team from Friborg, who lost to the unpredictable bottom light Ajoie lineup

On the pre-playoff line, the starting position has become even more difficult after Ambri’s dramatic victory in Davos (3:2 after 0:2!). It is clear that the final decision will not be made until Saturday, as Ambri and Lugano were in the hottest derby since the 2006 playoff game, as the Bianconeri triumphed after trailing 0-3 in the series and the sacking of coach Larry Huras and were the latest champions.

Lugano has a disadvantage in the stick fight: the direct encounters, which decide in case of a tie. The Gianinazzi team’s record is negative against both Lausanne and Kloten and Bern. (sr)
