Nadal will probably take a break until April

Rafael Nadal made it to the Indian Wells final last year, losing to Taylor Fritz.

Rafael Nadal has to do without the start at the first ATP 1000 tournament of the year in Indian Wells. The 36-year-old Spaniard has not played a match since the second round at the Australian Open due to a hip injury.

The forfeit that the organizers report for the tournament in the coming week is not surprising: in mid-January, Nadal assumed that there would be a forced break of six to eight weeks. Since he last trained on sand in Mallorca, the 22-time Major winner also has to forego the Miami tournament (starting March 22) and go straight into the sand season. Spanish media suspect Nadal is aiming to return to the tour for the Monte Carlo tournament in early April.

The loss of his ATP points won as a finalist at the Indian Wells tournament last year will cause Nadal to drop further down the world rankings. The current number 8 has been in the top ten of the ranking for almost 18 years. (SDA/dti)
