Do players have a say in transfers?
Basically not. The collective agreement with the players’ union allows NHL teams to sell a player in exchange. If you have a contract, you must fulfill it at the new location (such as now Niederreiter in Winnipeg).
Are there exceptions?
Yes. Players can have clauses in their contracts that they can only be transferred with their consent or only to specific clubs. For example, Nashville cannot give up Roman Josi without his blessing.
Why did San Jose Meier throw up?
Meier becomes a “Restricted Free Agent” at the end of the season. Since the Sharks could not agree on a new contract with him, they would only have retained the rights to him if they made him an offer of at least $10 million for a year, which will be this season’s wages . But in the summer of 2024, Meier would then be an “unrestricted free agent” and could freely choose his club without the Sharks getting anything in return.
