The police, who do not specify where the arrests took place, estimate the extent of the fraud at 30,000 euros
National police arrested six persons of Spanish nationality for allegedly participating in the fixing of the Copa del Rey match played on December 2, 2021 between Huracán Melilla and Levante UD, which ended 0-8.
In a press release, the General Directorate of Police reported that these six arrests were the result of an investigation in which the Global Betting Market Research Service (SIGMA) of the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) and LaLiga collaborated.
The police, who did not specify where the arrests took place, estimated the extent of the fraud at 30,000 euros, for which the arrested bet, electronically and in person, on a certain result in relation to the match. Agents received a warning from the General Directorate for the Regulation of Games of Chance about the placing of mass bets in connection with this meeting, online and in person at casinos in Melilla.
The National Police Center for Integrity in Sports and Gambling (CENPIDA) of the National Police launched an investigation following complaints made by various bookmakers and LaLiga and after receiving information from the RFEF. The researchers checked 77 bets in casinos in Melilla, with a bet amount of around €6,000 and a total prize amount of €14,000.
In addition, electronically there was a mass receipt of bets and suspicious slips related to the sporting event. All this allowed the entire bet on a certain result to be generated in just three hours, and in most cases the result was in favor of visiting Levante, who eventually celebrated with an eight-goal margin over Huracán Melilla. Both teams announced last Thursday that they are on the sidelines of this alleged match-fixing.
Thus, Levante assured that it was “completely unaware of the facts condemned” by LaLiga, while CD Huracán Melilla, last in Group IX Tercera RFEF, expressed its “surprise” and showed its willingness to cooperate with Justice “in everything you want ” for clarification of the complaint.
