“We have to succeed in things that are not obvious. With the slap in the face against Portugal, the opposite was the case: we didn’t succeed,” the defender recalls. The departure could not come soon enough after the painful defeat. “I just wanted to leave. I had no more thoughts and I didn’t feel like playing football at all for a few days. The defeat was hard to accept.”
After fifteen minutes at the end
Schär’s participation in the round of 16 was at stake for a long time. The 31-year-old man was in poor health. “I had a high fever for three days, I felt like I was dead. In hindsight, it would have been smarter to say: ‘It doesn’t work,’» he admits.
But on match day, Schär felt better and wanted to play at all costs. “I thought it could work. You have to understand: it was the World Cup round of 16! No player wants to miss that, any footballer would have behaved like me.”
He would regret the decision shortly after the game kicked off. “I could barely move. I felt worse than ever in my career. After 15 minutes I noticed I was at my performance limit. I somehow fought through it but nothing worked at half time.”

The World Cup is now in the past. Schär is having a strong season at his club Newcastle United. They are currently fifth in the Premier League. On Sunday, the “Magpies” have a chance to win their first title in 68 years in the League Cup final against Manchester United.
The defender also has big plans for the Swiss national team.
