Sergio Ramos resigns from the Spanish national team

Sergio Ramos retires from the Spanish national team after 180 international matches.

Central defender of Spain Sergio Ramos (36) announces his retirement from the national team via social media. As the contributions show, the decision was probably not entirely voluntary. Apparently Spain coach Luis De La Fuente has told the PSG star over the phone that he no longer played a part in his plans.

“It is with deep regret that this comes to the end of a journey I had hoped would last longer,” Ramos wrote on Instagram. He is proud of his performances for the Spanish national team. “This gun, this shirt and this fan base made me happy. I will continue to cheer for my country from home.”

With 180 appearances (23 goals), the 36-year-old is Spain’s record international. He has been among the top performers since 2005 and was captain of the “Furia Roja” for many years. He was part of the golden generation that led Spain to their first World Cup title in 2010 and two European Championship titles (2008 and 2012). In March 2021, Ramos played his last international match. He has not been called up since then, partly due to an injury. The defender was also not nominated by the then national coach Luis Enrique for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. (mbi)
