Casimir Schmidt and Loran de Munck are on course for the final at the World Gymnastics Championships in Liverpool. At the Nations Cup, the Dutch team with Jordi Hagenaar, Martijn de Veer and Jermain Grünberg alongside De Munck and Schmidt can forget about the final.
De Munck scored 14.833 points in vaulting, which earned him silver at the last European Championships. He is currently fourth in the standings, led by Rhys McClenaghan of Ireland (15,233).
With 82,565 points, Schmidt has a chance of a place in the all-around final. He is provisionally twelfth and the best 24 gymnasts advance to the final. The Japanese Wataru Tanigawa is currently in the lead (84,731).
Nations Cup
In the Nations Cup, the Netherlands scored a total of 242,060 points, good for tenth place after four of the six subclasses. The eight best teams qualify for the final. Japan is currently first in the country ranking with 260,695 points.
“We kept up well today. I think a fourteenth place is possible,” said Van Meldert after the Dutchman’s action. “The goal was top 18 and a final, so if nothing weird happens anymore, we’ve certainly achieved it.”
The worth of the performance of the Dutch gymnasts will only become clear around 11.50 pm Dutch time, when all the participants have had their turn.
