Max Verstappen has nothing to do with statistics, numbers and records. But he couldn’t deny that he made Formula 1 history in Mexico with his fourteenth GP win of the season.

Never before has a driver won so many Grands Prix in one season. Michael Schumacher and Sebastian Vettel had thirteen wins in their best championship years.

Where Verstappen reacted a little coldly – “It’s very nice, but I live a little more in the moment and just hope to get the best out of myself every weekend” – he was showered with compliments from the rest of the racing world.

“Max’s fourteenth is different from my thirteenth because after my thirteenth the season was over. I think and hope he can put the pointer on sixteen. He drives fantastic: a ‘hell season’.”

“He has a great car and the team is doing great. It would almost be a disappointment if Max didn’t win in Brazil and Abu Dhabi. I can see his drive. When I won twelve, all I could think about was number thirteen.”

Mick Schumacher (Haas driver and son of Michael whose record has now been broken)

“Obviously it’s not a very fair comparison. This year it’s 22 races and my father had less in one year. We knew that if the number of races expanded so much, Michael and Sebastian would lose the record one day. If we get 24 or 25 races in the future, Max’s record will be broken too, solo or not.”

Carlos Sainz (Ferrari, made his Toro Rosso debut with Verstappen in 2015)

“No one would have thought that a driver would win fourteen or more races this year. Certainly not us at Ferrari because we started so well. I could have made it harder for Max, especially in the first few races. Our car was very good back then, but I didn’t really feel comfortable behind the wheel at the time.”

“It’s very unfortunate that Charles and I couldn’t fight with Max more as Red Bull Racing became more and more dominant, but I wish him that milestone. He’s having an unprecedented season. Next season we will follow him. New year, new car, new laps, new opportunities.”

“I don’t think anybody can stop Max before the end of the season. It’s great that he breaks the record here: this is Maxico! This is his route. He has already won here four times.”

George Russell (Mercedes, grew up karting with Verstappen)

“We’ve known for a long time how strong Max is. It is of course not the first time in Formula 1 history that a driver or a team has been so dominant. Mercedes experienced it too: Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg won at some point. almost all races.”
