Fledderus surprises Kok and Leerdam in the first 500 meters in Thialf
Marrit Fledderus caused an upset at the qualifying tournament for the World Cup competitions in Heerenveen by winning the first 500 meters. Fledderus clocked a personal best of 37.68, two hundredths faster than Femke Kok.
Fledderus was the second fastest Dutchwoman behind Kok last season but was too quick for her in Thialf on Saturday. Kok was second with 37.70, Jutta Leerdam was number three with 37.80.
All skaters ride two 500 meters, the second round follows at 4:15 p.m. The best time counts, the fastest five women qualify for the first four World Cups.
